Obituary of Thomas Wayne Lackey
Please share a memory of Thomas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Thomas Wayne Lackey, 75, of Munford, AL passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. His family will receive friends at Usrey Funeral Home of Talladega on Friday, November 01, 2024 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. A funeral ceremony will be held in his honor at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, November 02, 2024 at Usrey Funeral Home of Talladega with Ray Camp officiating. Interment will follow directly after the service at Bethlehem Cemetery in Munford.
Mr. Lackey was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega County, and he attended both Munford and Winterboro High Schools. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran who served in the United States Army. He was a master welder at Tractor and Equipment Company for 22 years where he was affectionately known as “The Legend”. He loved to turkey hunt and was a member of the Alabama Dog Hunters Association. Mr. Lackey was also an exceptional gardener who could make anything grow. He enjoyed growing fruit trees and tomatoes, but he especially liked growing his Daylilies. He even crossbred his own variations and had Daylilies that no one else had. His hobbies included drinking piping hot black coffee at all hours of the day, watching old western movies and T.V. shows, and grocery shopping for all of his grandchildren’s favorite snacks. He was also an avid University of Alabama football fan. Mr. Lackey loved learning about new things and was known for the many eccentric things that he would obsess over. He somehow always knew the right way to do everything. Mr. Lackey was a devoted and loving husband, father, and “Big Pappa” whose family was his entire world, and he will be missed greatly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Mozelle Lackey; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Glenn and Pete Parnell; sister, Jean Ann Mann; brothers, Harley Lackey (Dot) and Bo Lackey; nephew, Luke Mann, and great-nephew, Gunner Walker.
Mr. Lackey is survived by his wife of 57 years, Glennice Lackey; daughter, Tara Wideman (Jackie); son, Wayne Lackey (CaySal); grandchildren, Evin Stephens, Kevin Stephens (Sarah), Devin Stephens (Kayla), Adam Wideman (Jessica), and Isabel Lackey; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Stephens, Hannah Stephens, Kynlee Stephens, Charlie Stephens, Korbyn Stephens, Dawson Stephens, and Jace Wideman; brothers, Ted Lackey (Teresa), Mark Lackey (Pace), and Jeff Lackey (Barbara), and sisters, Ellen Godfrey (Dennis), Angela Cooley (Harry), and LuGenia Bramblett (Michael). Mr. Lackey is also survived by—in his own words—his most handsome and well behaved grandson, his dog, Oakley, and a “drove” of nieces and nephews.
Todd Stephens, Jeremy Johnson, Chris Tarwater, Logan Bell, Don Andrews, David Hogan, Scott Vice, and Nick Keith will serve as pallbearers.
Scott Stephens, Wilfred Smith, Brandon and Kami Teauge, Gary Sanders, and all of his dog hunting buddies will serve as honorary pallbearers.
