Jerry Wayne “Buddy” Spradley, a man of deep passion, creativity, and dedication, passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2024. He was a devoted member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, where his faith was the cornerstone of his life and his community. His commitment to his faith was as unwavering as his love for art and history. Buddy was a proud graduate of both the University of Alabama and Jacksonville State University, where he laid the foundation for his future endeavors. His academic journey fueled his passion for knowledge, particularly in the fields of art and archaeology. A true scholar, Buddy participated in registered archaeology digs with Jacksonville State University, Auburn University, and the University of Alabama. His fascination with uncovering the past complemented his lifelong pursuit of knowledge and appreciation for history. As a renowned artist, Buddy left an indelible mark on the world through his work. His artistic talents were nationally recognized when his artwork, representing Alabama’s state tree, was featured in the 95th Annual National Christmas Tree Lighting in Washington, D.C. This achievement was a testament to his exceptional skill and the pride he took in representing his home state. Beyond his own artistic endeavors, Buddy was a beloved art teacher who inspired countless students throughout his career. His patience, passion, and ability to bring out the best in his students made him a cherished mentor to many. Buddy’s legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the art he created, and the history he helped uncover. He is survived by his brother, Donald D. “Scooter” Spradley (Lisa Phillips Spradley) of Fairhope, Alabama, aunts, Jane Kilgroe and Jean Phillips of Pell City, Alabama, and several nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, students, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. The funeral service for Buddy will be held on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at 2 PM at Usrey Funeral Home – Pell City, with Father Michael Sexton and Dr. Michael Barber officiating. Interment will follow at Cook Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Usrey Funeral Home – Pell City from 1 PM until 2 PM on Sunday, September 1, 2024.
