I am very glad to have known and had the privilege of working with "Dr Leigh" through the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church and through the Cheaha District UMC where he served as a member of the Conference Board of Pensions and as District Lay Leader. Rest in Peace kind sir!

Forty years ago I was a baby RN working on the surgical floor at Citizens Hospital. I learned so much from Dr. Murphy. He loved to teach us or take time to explain things to us when we had questions. I think every nurse that came through the hospital learned about third spacing, wet to dry dressings, and the proper way to apply an abdominal dressing. He would often explain to patients why being at Talladega, where everyone knew someone that made them special to be cared for, rather than go to the big Birmingham hospitals where people didn’t know you.
We shared our own few little funnies that he always reminded me of years later. I enjoyed my time in the OR and watching him work. He once bought us homemade soup from home, thanks to GeorgeAnn, when we were snowed in and sleeping on stretchers in the Recovery Room. He was a kind-hearted, down to earth man with a spirit of service.
I’m sure his family will miss him very much.
RIP, Doctor.

I will always remember how kind Dr. Murphy was to John and me when we first started to Talladega First Methodist. Most Wednesday nights, we would ride the elevator with Dr. Murphy and his sweet wife! We would exchange pleasantries. We will miss him on Wednesday as well as in the choir. In the short time I have known him, I admire his sweet Christian spirit and his love for foreign missions.
Dr. Murphy, Thank you for your sincere and admirable example amidst such a troubled world!

So sad to hear of Dr Murphy’s passing, he was the best surgeon and DR I have ever worked for, he and the TSA group taught me so much, I am the nurse I am today because of him. I have so many great memories of my time working with him. I always told him he should write a book… I treasure all my Christmas ornaments that he made through the years. My deepest condolences to Georgianna and Michael and his family

Dr. Murphy was a rare, rare man. A genuinely good man whose light shone softly yet continuously throughout the many years I knew him. He successfully performed an emergency appendectomy on my brother in 1978. He visited my father in the hospital when his lung collapsed just a couple of months after I began attending First Methodist Church in the late 1990s. He encouraged us all throughout what turned into a more than month-long, scary hospitalization. He always asked about my family and me when he saw me, and he always encouraged me. I wept when I read of his passing. He was one of those very special people I wished would live forever on this Earth. A sweet light has gone out in Talladega. And its warmth will be greatly missed.
