Cecilia and I were childhood friends at Winterboro School in Alpine, Alabama. She and I sang together from the time when we were very young. We learned to harmonize together very well. We entered talent contest together. She was a close friend. Although, from time to time, Cecilia would stutter in her speech, it never affected her singing. She had a beautiful voice and I cherish the times we had to sing together throughout our school years. In High School, we sang together in our Glee Club. We graduated together in the Class of ‘67. Although I moved away to go to college, and later married, through the years, while visiting my parents in Talladega, I would get to see Cecilia or talk to her on the phone. However, there were several years when we lost contact. In 2008, at our school Winterboro multi-class reunion, Cecilia came up to me in the gym and said, “Dorlene, do you know who I am?” I did not recognize her. She said, “You better know who I am! We used to sing together and I was one of your best friends!” She then said, “I’m Cecilia!” We grabbed each other and hugged and talked and laughed together for a long time. That was a memory I will never forget.
