I never lived in Talladega, but I visited it hundreds of times growing up, and I'm thankful this gave me the opportunity to get to know Nena Durden. Nena was my dad's first cousin, and she and her mother (my GREAT Aunt Hattie) checked in on my Grandmother Cox, a widow, on at least a weekly basis. So when I'd come to Talladega, my grandmother would tell me about how Nena and "Sister" Hattie had been by to visit or to take her out for a drive to see the scenery. Nena would sometimes come by when I was in town, and I was able to get to know this person whose kindness I'd already heard so much about. I feel like Nena taught me what it means to really love your family, even extended family. She taught me the value of spending time with those that might be lonely, even if you yourself had a busy and hectic schedule. I will always be thankful for all the time and care she gave to my grandmother. Wish I could be there for the services to honor this amazing woman! Sending prayers to all of her family.
