Since I first learned of Prof Dowling's passing a few weeks after it was announced, I have thought of what could be said in memory of such an outstanding herpetologist, mentor and, most of all, unique and generous, humble person. I first met Prof Dowling when I was about 12 or 13 years old as an overly enthusiastic volunteer in the Herpetological Search Service. I was very fortunate to become re-acquainted with Prof Dowling in the 1980's, and eagerly anticipated our discussions and his advice.
It is patently obvious that his prolific, and often germinative contributions to science stand as a monument, but in many ways only represent an important component of a complex and welcoming person who retained throughout his life his enthusiasm for teaching, mentoring and researching. I can only say, Thank You, Prof Dowling, I am grateful that I had my own small chance to have known you for a time.
My heartfelt condolences to the family and close friends for the loss of an irreplaceable man, tempered by the recognition of a life well-lived.

I'm so sorry to see Dr. Dowling just passed. I have frogs decorating my office and as my pets as a direct result of my taking his Herpetology field trip in 198....... or so as an undergrad at NYU. We used to hang out at the various bars around the campus and I did some wacky extra credit computer project FROGGY, what caused a mysterious loss of computer time at the Academic Computer Facility and launched my career in biomedical computing. My pet Senior Frog estivation here at my desk and I offer my condolences to Prof. Dowling's family, vivarium and Prof. Jenner

Dear Jan,
Thinking of you during this time of loss. I know that the two of you had something very special and that that will never change. How many people share frozen mice in the freezer, fuzzy wolf spiders and skunks under the bath tub? I imagine that you both had some exciting adventures in the field with our reptile friends. So special to have been able to share your life work with someone like Herndon.

Remembering Dr. Dowling fondly - I have taken many wonderful memories away from my days at NYU, studying Diamondback terrapins in the lab, under his guidance.
Now as a biology professor at Queens College, CUNY - I share some of his wisdom and wit with my own students!

My deepest condolences to a Long Time Friend. Though we have not been in touch for quite a long time. I have many fond remembrances of many years ago. When he returned from a long time trip to the Galapagos Islands, when it was not a tourist attraction like today. I met them at the Miami airport and helped them get transferred to a flight to NY, with all of there collections. They had apparently been left on the island, had run out of food and were living off wild goats. I have forgotten the name of the other herpetologist that was with Herndon on this trip. The world has lost a great man. My deepest sympathy. Ralph Curtis

I was saddened to learn of Herndon's passing. He was an amazing, brilliant and admirable man. I last saw him a few years ago with Barbara for a dinner. I'm glad I had that opportunity. With Dad, Barbara and now Herndon gone, it marks the end of that generation.
Kind regards to all and I hope we can find a time and place to celebrate the generation, now gone, and catch up with each other.
Love,
Ed Dowling

I can’t begin to describe how much Dr. Dowling influenced me as a student, a professional and a human being. He was a role model on so many levels and he likewise left his mark on many of the people that I most admire.
An amazing teacher with an inexhaustible amount of knowledge, days (and nights) in the field with Dr. Dowling were full of wonder and excitement. Simple things became learning experiences not easily forgotten. Herndon made the rigors of fieldwork fun on every level and even in the midst of hellacious weather and primitive living conditions, he imparted calm and class to any given situation.
He had a remarkable ability to simultaneously be both dignified and approachable, intellectual and humorous, passionate and understanding. He was a man-mountain who inspired awe, yet still a teddy bear that you would want to hug. I consider it a privilege to have known him, and an honor to have called the Great Man friend.
My deepest condolences to Jan and the rest of his family.

I am saddened at the loss of Herndon. He was an inspiration to me as an undergrad and graduate student, and he consistently responded to my frequent inquiries about the systematics of snakes. We both loved Elaphe guttata and corresponded often about our projects, and he gave sage advice in my work on Neotropical snakes.
I have patterned my interactions with young biologists on the way he responded. He will be missed, but he leaves a strong legacy.

As one of his graduate students - the "Boss" not only mentored my doctorate at NYU, but also inspired my teaching career which is now going on 43 years. As part of the annual field trip to Jasper County for more than a decade, I appreciated HGD's unique qualities- not to mention his bellowing "Go...ing" to gather up the students in the field. He is the founding force of the Field Buddies up here in New York and New Jersey - a group of former students who shared the herp lab and field trips and to this day are close friends and travel companions. We visited Herndon and Jan over the years down in Alabama - we enjoyed the company, the stories, the experience of being part of the HGD story - stories I still tell and show my students today. Thanks "boss" - you are not forgotten and will always be in our hearts. Rest in Peace - its "cocktail time" !

I first met Dr. Dowling in the Reptile House at the Bronx Zoo where I had come about a problem with turtles I was studying. The next I saw him, he was handing me 2 round trip airplane tickets to Jamaica and the keys to a house he kept there not many feet from the Caribbean where, I learned, I was to take his eldest daughter on our honeymoon. On his shelves of books I found one entitled Birds of the West Indies, the author of which was James Bond, the name Ian Fleming, who had a house down the road, and the same book on his shelves, would use for his eponymous character. Neither Ian Fleming nor James Bond had a step on Herndon Dowling.

My love and condolences to you all. I remember your father as a lovely man, your home always welcoming when I came to play with Erin. I had no idea of his vast accomplishments, tho. Perhaps best, considering my childhood feelings about snakes... All my best.
