Since I first learned of Prof Dowling's passing a few weeks after it was announced, I have thought of what could be said in memory of such an outstanding herpetologist, mentor and, most of all, unique and generous, humble person. I first met Prof Dowling when I was about 12 or 13 years old as an overly enthusiastic volunteer in the Herpetological Search Service. I was very fortunate to become re-acquainted with Prof Dowling in the 1980's, and eagerly anticipated our discussions and his advice.
It is patently obvious that his prolific, and often germinative contributions to science stand as a monument, but in many ways only represent an important component of a complex and welcoming person who retained throughout his life his enthusiasm for teaching, mentoring and researching. I can only say, Thank You, Prof Dowling, I am grateful that I had my own small chance to have known you for a time.
My heartfelt condolences to the family and close friends for the loss of an irreplaceable man, tempered by the recognition of a life well-lived.
