Obituary of Rebecca Heacock

Rebecca Turbeville Heacock, long time resident of Talladega, AL passed away on Sunday, January 29. Becky was born in Turbeville, SC on January 8, 1919. She attended high school in Hopkinsville, KY and graduated from Athens College with a major in English. While in college, Becky was selected as May Queen. Following graduation, Becky moved to Sylacauga, AL where she taught school. There she met and later wed James Warren Heacock on December 28, 1941. The couple then moved to San Francisco and while Jimmy served in the Pacific Theatre with the US Navy during World War II, Becky worked at Bank of America. After the War, the couple settled in Talladega, AL where they raised 5 children: Jim (Harriet) Heacock of Birmingham, AL; Becky (Alton) James of Mobile, AL; Gary (Kathy) Heacock of Talladega; Carol (Carroll) Sullivan of Mobile; and Heidi (Sam) Yates of Birmingham. Throughout her years, Becky was very active in the Talladega community as a member of the Junior Welfare League, Holly Garden Club, the Highland City Club, and the Argus Club. She was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Talladega where she taught Sunday school and was known for her seafood casserole at the Tasters' Luncheon. Becky was blessed with a long and wonderful life highlighted by numerous trips with Jimmy throughout the world. Just last month, on December 28, the couple had celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary. In addition to her husband and her 5 children, Becky is survived by her 13 grandchildren: Jay Heacock, Harrison Heacock, Rebecca James Duckworth, Will James, Frances (John) Sullivan Mayhall, John Warren (Anna) Sullivan, David (Laura) Heacock, Daniel Heacock, Stephen Heacock, Elizabeth (Charlie) Yates Scribner, Virginia Yates, Kathryn Yates, and Samantha Yates; as well as her 2 great grandsons: Jack and Andrew Mayhall. Becky is also survived by her brother Bill (Pat) Turbeville of St. Simons Island, GA. Becky was predeceased by her parents Jasper and Lucille Turbeville; her sisters: Sara Bryan, Vivian Wimberly, Polly Means; and her brothers: Jack Turbeville and Gus Turbeville and grandchild, Rebecca Caroline Yates. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 31 at the First United Methodist Church officiated by Reverend Ted Peterson at 2 pm followed by a family graveside service. Visitation will take place in the Church Parlor from 12:30 pm until 2 pm. Usrey Funeral Home of Talladega will direct. A special thanks goes to her caregivers Almeta Turner and Debra Guy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends consider a gift in Mrs. Heacock's memory be made to the First United Methodist Church, 400 East Street South, Talladega, AL 35160, or to a charity of your choosing. Pallbearers will be Samuel Yates, Alton James, Carroll Sullivan, Daniel Heacock, Stephen Heacock, John Mayhall and Charles Scribner.
