Obituary of Henry Lester Ponder

Usrey Funeral home Talladega Al. HENRY LESTER PONDER, born October 11, 1920, passed away March 27, 2015, at the age of 94 at the Col. Robert L. Howard Veterans Home in Pell City. He lived most of his life in Talladega and Winterboro. He was a graduate of Winterboro High School and was a charter member of Southside Baptist Church in Talladega. He was retired from the US Post Office and was a World War II Air Force veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years Muriel Hubbard Ponder, son Dwight Wayne Ponder, six brothers, and five sisters. He is survived by his daughter Carolyn Ponder Crowell (John Robert) of Birmingham, granddaughter Beth Crowell of Pelham, son Michael Ponder (Cheryl) of Heflin, grandson Rodney Wayne Ponder and daughter-in-law Sandy Ponder of Talladega, great-grandchildren Leah and Luke Ponder, one brother Walter T. Ponder of Alexandria, three sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Monday, March 30, 2015, at 1:00 PM at Usrey Funeral Home in Talladega. Family will receive family and friends prior to the service from 11:30 AM until 1:00 PM. Pastors Donnie Thompson, great-nephew, and Bobby Freeman will conduct the service. Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery. The family would like to extend a heart-felt “Thank You” and deep appreciation to the staff of Col. Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home, and Alacare Hospice who provided extraordinary care for Mr. Ponder and his family. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his memory can be made to Southside Baptist Church, 1101 Cherry Street, Talladega, AL 35160.
