James Calvin Peeples Jr., beloved Talladega resident, passed away on December 13,
2024, at the age of 96. A man of faith, service, and passion, Mr. Peeples lived a rich
and fulfilling life dedicated to his family, community, and personal interests.
A proud graduate of the University of Alabama, Mr. Peeples served his country
honorably during the Korean War as an NSA cryptologist. He was Honorably discharged as a
Lieutenant Colonel in 1954, a testament to his dedication and commitment to national
service.
For over three decades, Mr. Peeples was the owner and proprietor of Peeples Family
Store, a local dry goods purveyor.
An avid golfer, he coined his weekly assembly of golfers; “OFO”; -” Old Folks Open”
- a golf group that reflected his love and for the sport. When not on the course,
He fulfilled his joy of the game by watching The Golf Channel, his favorite.
Music was another of Mr. Peeples great loves. A dedicated member of the First Baptist
Church of Talladega choir, he also shared his musical talents through community
theater, notably performing in the production of “Oklahoma”.
Mr. Peeples is survived by his four sons: James Calvin Peeples III. of Orange Beach,
AL; David Peeples of Birmingham, AL; Craig Peeples of Atlanta, GA and wife Carrie;
and Joe Peeples of Jacksonville, FL and wife Brandi. He also leaves behind three
grandchildren, Nicholas and Emma Peeples, Jennifer (nee’ Peeples) Sprague, and
one great-grandchild, Thomas James (TJ) Sprague.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00pm Monday December 16, 2024, at Oak Hill cemetery in Talladega. Robert Klotz will officiate the service.
In Lieu of flowers. His family suggest that memorial contributions be made to the Frist Baptist Church or a Veterans organization of your choice. Usrey Funeral home in Talladega will direct the service.
