Obituary of Charles Gregory "Greg" Byrd
Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that the family of Charles Gregory “Greg” Byrd, 61, announces that the end of Greg’s journey on Earth was on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham, AL. A celebration of life will be held in his honor at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Usrey Funeral Home of Talladega with Reverend Charles Stone officiating. His family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service.
Greg was born in Memphis, Tennessee to his parents, Betty S. and Bobby E. Byrd. His journey then took him to Talladega, AL where he spent most of his childhood and still has many friends and family to this day. His journey as a young man started with his love of baseball and basketball. He was also in the Boy Scout of America, Troop 130 where he earned many achievement and merit badges. Mr. Byrd later moved back to Maryville, TN where he graduated from Heritage High School. After graduation, Greg attended Jacksonville State University. He also worked as a painting contractor in Dothan, AL where he lived for most of his life.
Mr. Byrd enjoyed playing poker on Friday nights at his Aunt Barbara’s house and having cookouts on Saturdays with his family and friends while watching University of Tennessee football. He also loved deep sea fishing with his children, Chelsea and Austin, and his friends. Greg was a member of Ass Kicking Smokey Mountain Chili cook-off team which won many first place trophies and raised money for local charities.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne “Sherri” Byrd (DOD: 01/30/2012), son, Gregory Austin Byrd (DOD: 03/01/2023), and father, Bobby E. Byrd (DOD: 05/30/2022).
Mr. Byrd is survived by his mother, Betty S, Byrd; daughter, Chelsea Craig (Bill); granddaughter, Tatum Richbourg, and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousin.
Greg loved deeply and genuinely cared for his family and friends. Let us ask our Heavenly Father to help us remember Gregory Charles “Greg” Byrd with love, joy and laughter and thank Him for all of the memories and time that we shared with Greg. May you rest in peace until we meet again. Amen.
Flowers in Mr. Byrd’s memory will be accepted at Usrey Funeral Home.
