Anyone who was even a little in Janice’s orbit couldn’t help but be in shock and heartbroken on July 12.
Part of why it is so shocking I think is that despite being sick recently, Janice had an eternal youthfulness. Without Janice, I wouldn’t have one of my dearest “sisters”- what are friends if not the family we choose for ourselves?! Janice herself became a friend. You couldn’t help but love her, whether she was making us crack up or giving us a bit of tough love. It had been too long since I have seen Janice and my heart hurts knowing I can never hug her on earth again or see that famous smile that Amberlee inherited or the smirk that Brad did. She was the best Mimi. I know no words any of us can say will really help the ache those closest to Janice feel, but we are here for you. And one day we will all see Janice again.

Janice I’m going to miss your contagious smile everyday. You were a great mother and grandmother and it never went unnoticed. Rest in peace. I never got to tell you this but I promise I will take care of Amberlee and Alexander.

Janice was my oldest friend and she was my best friend during the best time of my life! She was always part of those incredible times. She was thoughtful and responsible.she had great parents and I loved spending time with her.
25 yrs after we met…after she had married my 2nd cousin on my Mothers side. I learned we were related on my Fathers side. Her Mother and I shared the same name, Virginia Whitley.
I saw her a few years ago for the first time since we were 16…..she looked exactly the same…had the same level of energy and that incredible confidence. Always quick to laugh and have a good time. I respected her and how she loved her friends and family. She was a beautiful soul. I know they’re really happy in heaven to have her home.

I first met Janice online because of her love for genealogy. While doing family research I came upon her book she had published with a very informative and insightful family history. She put so much into that book and I treasure the copy she sent me. It also turned out we are cousins. In another reality we would have spent our childhoods together and grown up together and I realize I missed out on a good thing. I’ll forever hold dear the memory of the one time we got to meet.

Q: Where did Janice like to travel?
A: The beach! She has all sorts of beach pics, I'm sure. These were sent to me fairly recently when her and her friend traveled to the beach! Thought I would share them. Love you, Janice.

Janice enjoyed the outdoors, history, music, and especially her grandson, Alexander - also her little dog. She had her own kayak, hiking stick and favorite boots. She demonstated endurance hiking in and out of Walls of Jericho, Kayaking across the Indian Pass to St.Vincent Island, and then wading its swamps and isolated beaches, hiking up Cowee Mound and the surrounding mountain tops. She contributed to Civil War era re-enactments, research and wrote on the history of St.Clair County and The Great Locomotive Chase. She enjoyed a session of Cirque de Soliel. She demonstrated an endurance for travel on a "Trip from Hell" on a road trip ultimately to Oklahoma First American's Museum (opening week), Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Meteor Cradle, Sunset Crater, Grand Canyon, Sedona, Tombstone, and everything in between. All of this within a space of a year.....and I got to tag along. Janice was not one for sitting on the porch.

Even though we had grown apart the last few years Janice was always my person and always will be. I have so many memories it's difficult to narrow it down. People were drawn to Janice they would chat her up without prompting. I remember when we lived in Dahlonega and Janice had gone to a convenience store. The clerk asked her to watch the counter, she told Janice her back was hurting clear up to her shoulder blades because she had to go to the bathroom. Janice watched the register for the lady and told me she didn't need all that information. Janice meant so much to me that I asked for her to be in the delivery room when I gave birth to my son instead of my mother. Janice was/IS my son's godmother. Another great memory for me is the time when she joined me to drive my son to Panama City. We had stopped at a rest area and my son was getting fussy. She stood in front of him and portrayed Chris Farley in Tommy boy. She put her hands up to her shoulders and started twisting from side to side while singing, "fat man in a little coat." He wasn't fussy after that he was laughing. Janice was there for every single high and low in my life. She believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. I'm heart broken.

As I once said years ago…
Janice, will be “forever young.” She had a spirit, a way of life that would lift anyone up. Her beautiful smile could make anything better, & her wit was on point. She is one of my best friends mama’s & she is like one of the girls, a friend. A friend that will truly be missed. Thank you for who you were Janice, for without you, I wouldn’t have my dear friend Amberlee. Cheers to you in heaven, to such an amazing mama, Mimi, & friend.

I was so glad to have been able to spend time with Janice a few weeks ago. Her and Alexander came to Alabama to visit and I was glad to have been on her list to visit. Alexander enjoyed a few hours of swimming while she and I talked. Going through pictures of all of our times together it brought tears to my eyes. They were tears of sadness but yet tears of joy that she was smiling in every picture because she loved being with family. She was more like a sister to John David because he spent so much time with her growing up. He and I both are going to miss her so much. Love you Janice. John David and Rose Ann

My earliest memory of Aunt Jan Jan was riding with her around the lake. She would pretend we were in a race car. Every time someone met us she would yell " look at them oh no they are going the wrong way." There are so many memories over my lifetime that have her in them, and that I will always be thankful for. I will sure miss her laugh and her hugs. Until we meet again....love your favorite neice.

It is with a heavy heart that Janice left us so soon. I didn’t know her for a long time but she had an amazing character and full of life. She loved her daughter Amberlee and grandson Alexander so much. She was an amazing Mimi to Alexander. She went to all his sports games and just a couple of weeks ago taught him how to swim! She will be dearly missed.

Growing up, some of my fondest memories are of playing with Janice, Billy, and other cousins at Pinedale Shores. I remember how the big slide scared me at first, but Janice encouraged me and waited at the bottom. I remember when the game room opened and how much fun we had there. Over the years, we stayed in touch, but I wish I had lived closer so I could see her more often. She always had a ready smile, had something kind - or funny - to say, and had an unmatched zest for life. She adored her family, especially her children and her grandson, Alexander. As an Auburn fan, it was amusing to watch her - a diehard Alabama fan - cheer for
Alexander’s team - the War Eagles!
