Shannon Scott Fields, 57, of Pell City, Ala., passed away after an illness on December 22, 2023, at St. Vincent’s East Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.
He was preceded in death by his dad, W. Lawrence Fields.
Scott is survived by his mother, Brenda; sister, Danielle Fields Frye (Jay) and brother, Blair Fields (Devin).
Scott, who was never short on striking up a conversation, enjoyed joking with and aggravating his nieces and nephews, Addy and Emmy Frye, and Baylor, Holten, and Finley Fields. Born in Birmingham, Ala., on November 14, 1966, Scott graduated from Pell City High School in 1985 where he was an outstanding member of the varsity football team earning both First Team Defense All-State Honors by the Birmingham News and Honorable Mention Offensive Lineman honors by the Alabama Sports Writers Association in 1984.
Scott joined the United States Coast Guard in 1990 and was honorably discharged in 1995 after being stationed in New Orleans, La., and Mobile, Ala. During his time in the USCG, Scott received numerous decorations and medals including the National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Coast Guard Unit Commendation Ribbon, and Coast Guard Marksman Rifle Ribbon. He was also presented with the Coast Guard Achievement Medal which is based on superior performance, heroism, and leadership. He earned this for his response to an Amtrak train derailment in Mobile, Alabama, on September 22, 1993. Scott discovered six barges moored and upon further investigation found physical evidence that a tow boat had been involved. His actions and notification to the Federal investigators led to a successful reconstruction of the accident.
