Obituary of James Douglas Nixon Sr.

James Douglas Nixon Sr., 79, of Talladega, AL passed away at his home on Monday, August 14, 2023. His family will receive friends at Usrey Funeral Home of Talladega on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. A funeral ceremony will be held in his honor at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at First Freewill Baptist Church with Robert Earl Sanders officiating. Mr. Nixon will lie in state for one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow directly after the service at Pine Hill Memorial Park. Mr. Nixon was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega who was born and raised in the community of Bemiston. He was a Shriner and 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Talladega Masonic Lodge # 261. He also served in the Alabama National Guard and retired from P.F. Moon Construction Company. Mr. Nixon enjoyed singing and attending church at First Freewill Baptist Church where he was a proud member. He also loved travelling and spending time with his family especially his great-grandchildren. He never failed to light up whenever they were around. He was a very loving husband, father, and paw-paw. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Mary Nixon, and brothers, Buck Nixon and Melvin Nixon. Mr. Nixon is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Elaine Nixon; son, James Douglas Nixon Jr.; daughter, Christy Nixon; grandchildren, Serra Smith (Matt), Jolie Champion, David Nixon (Truly), Marianel Huff, and Marienel Cruz; great-grandchildren, Kayden, Ariella, Kyler, and Abigail; sisters, Mary Adair and Patricia Parker, and a host of nieces and nephews. Billy Wilson, Scott Armbrester, Wayne Nixon, Matthew Smith, Chance Shiflett, Stevie Ferguson, David Ferguson, and David Nixon will serve as pallbearers. His family would like thank employees of Lakeside hospice for the care he received this past year.
