Mabel Nandean Moreland, 84, passed away on October 8, 2021, at the Grandview Hospital in Birmingham, after suffering a massive stroke. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held Monday, October 11, at Usrey Funeral Home in Pell City, Alabama. If you knew her, you will remember her: beautiful smile and sparkling green eyes that lit up whenever she saw you laughter and sense of humor unwavering faith unconditional love for her family and friends strong opinions expressed freely style - always perfect hair, makeup, nails, wardrobe, jewelry delicious coconut cakes! Nandean was born September 12, 1937, in Pell City, Alabama, the daughter of Josephine Pilkington and Harvey Wells. She easily made and kept many lifelong friendships. She and Jess Willard Moreland married in 1953 and enjoyed 47 years of a loving marriage until Willard’s death in 1999. After the birth of three sons, Jess Jr, Doug and Brian, Nandean and Willard loaded up their station wagon and moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1957. Their two daughters, Sandra and Diane, were born in Phoenix. Every summer the family would travel in their station wagon back to Alabama to visit their families - stopping in all the national parks and scenic attractions along the way. In 1971 the family moved to Talladega, Alabama to be closer to their extended families. In 1992, Nandean and Willard finished building their home in Pell City. Nandean enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved to travel and enjoyed many trips throughout the U.S., the Caribbean and Hawaii. She graduated from Nunnelly Technical College in 1981 and held several positions with local companies. She also volunteered her time to teach adults to read. She and Willard were founding members of the New Hope Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Moody, Alabama. She was a very active and beloved member of the Pell City Senior Center. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jess Willard Moreland, her sons Jess Moreland Jr. and Doug Moreland, and her brother James Wells. She is survived by her son Brian Moreland and wife Kathryn of Austin, Texas; daughter Sandra Moreland and husband Dan Kalinowski of Cumming, Georgia; daughter Diane Moreland Clark and husband David Clark of Trussville, Alabama; grandchildren Jennifer Moreland of Trussville, Alabama, Courtney Moreland Davis of Seaside, Florida; Clint Moreland of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; Brooke Moreland of New York City, New York; Alex Moreland of Austin, Texas; Joseph Moreland of Austin, Texas; Roman Kalinowski and Marek Kalinowski of Honolulu, Hawaii; and Kristin Clark of New York City, New York. Nandean was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held 2:00 pm on Monday, October 11, 2021 at Usrey Funeral Home, Pell City, with Mike Benge officiating. Interment will follow at First Baptist Cemetery in Odenville. The family will receive friends Monday, October 11, 2021, from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm at the funeral home. Condolences may be offered online at www.usreyfuneralhome.com.
