Obituary of James William "Jimmy" Brown, III

James William Brown, III, known by all as “Jimmy”, 73, of Ragland, Alabama, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2021, in Birmingham surrounded by his loving family. Jimmy was a member of Christ Unity Church in Pell City. He loved the Lord and doing work for his church. He was a devoted Christian, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He attended Ragland High School and received his business degree from Gadsden State Community College. He retired from National Cement Company in Ragland and helped support his wife with her business, Brown’s Cleaning Service, for over 35 years. Jimmy served 6 1/2 years in the United States Navy on the USS Muliphen as a Gunners Mate. He received a National Defense Service Medal for his service and dedication to his country. He loved to tell stories of his days serving in the United States Navy. His hobbies were gardening and lawn care. He loved to farm and grow fresh vegetables to share with his family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, James William Brown, Jr. and Ruby Crow Brown, and sisters, Faye Broadhead and Debbie Armstrong. He is survived by his loving wife of over 53 years, Julia Brown, 2 daughters Jeannie (Cabot) Canas and Jamye (Johnny) Calvin, 1 son James William “Bubba” Brown IV, grandchildren Karsen (Logan) Cornutt, Kelsey (Ryan) King, Morgan (Clint) Smith, Karlyn Brown, Ethan Brown and Cody Canas, 4 great-grandchildren, 4 sisters and 1 brother. The funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, March 13, 2021, at Usrey Funeral Home, Pell City, with Bro. Mike Allums officiating. Interment will follow at Hardin’s Chapel Cemetery in Ragland. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00-2:00pm at Usrey Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be James “Bubba” Brown, Cabot Canas, Johnny Calvin, Cody Canas, Ethan Brown, and Mike Gamel. Honorary Pallbearers are Charles Byers, Rick Elliott and Lanis White. Condolences may be offered online at usreyfuneralhome.com. Usrey Funeral Home, Pell City, is in charge of arrangements.
