There was no one like Bubba. I remember after I had known him for about a year I was working registration at an OA event and had to ask Tad who Floyd was from his troop because he forgot to get his event patch. He said, “Oh you mean Bubba.” I have dozens of great memories of him at camp but my favorite is probably the Sunday afternoon in 2008 when he and Tad showed up with Troop 199, and Seth recruited them to move 21 tents before dinner because the council office had overbooked a site by 40 people. That Saturday morning I was checking our campsites with the updated numbers and told Seth I didn’t know what we were going to do with no other sites to easily shift troops around. Seth’s first response was Tad will be here tomorrow, maybe he can help if we can find enough tents to move. Bubba was on the tractor moving pallets from a few minutes after he got there until dark. All in a day’s work to help the boys at camp. My second favorite memory was the time that I walked into the compound one day when no one was at camp yet and Bubba and Tad were sharpening lawn mower blades. I asked them why they were there. None of the ranger staff were around. Mama Bobo called Tad and said Mickey was too busy to sharpen her lawn more blades and the grass needed cutting. Tad and Bubba came up that week to make sure Mrs. Martha had her lawn mower in perfect shape. RIP my brother! I’ll be praying for the family and all of the folks in Pell City. He will definitely be missed!
