Obituary of Doris Machen O'Donnell
Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On January 4, 2021, Doris Machen O’Donnell gently slipped from this world into the open arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her presence here has left the world a better place.
Doris Virginia Machen was born in Gadsden Alabama on September 27, 1928 to Joe and Ethel Machen. She was the 4th of 6 children and was still a beloved big sister to surviving siblings, Ruth and Rachel. Doris spent her early years in Gadsden as a talented mischievous redhead who displayed a love for singing. She shared her beautiful alto voice in several church choirs and quartets from that time forward.
In 1939, the Machens moved to Shoal Creek Valley where Doris made a profession of faith at the age of 12 at Greensport Baptist Church. She graduated from Ashville High School at the age of 16. It was there that she met the love of her life, Seldon O’Donnell. In 1946, after Seldon’s return from the war, they married and began a life together that would last 67 years and produce a son, Ronnie, and a daughter, Pam, three grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
Doris and Seldon eventually settled in Linden Alabama where they lived for 44 years. There they were active in the community and were members of Linden Baptist Church where they made innumerable friends. She worked in the Linden Post Office for many years and knew most residents in Linden. After retirement in 2003, Doris and Seldon chose to move back home to the Shoal Creek Valley area of St Clair County with a beautiful view of Neely Henry lake.
Doris was a beloved member of Greensport Baptist Church and will be remembered as a truly Godly woman who lived her faith every day and shared her joy and talents with everyone that came into contact. Whether through one of her wonderful pound cakes or pan of brownies, an original painting or hand painted ceramic Santa, a song of worship or just a good laugh for those witnessing her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, she loved to reach out and touch people’s hearts.
At 92 years of age, Doris was a blessing to all who had the opportunity to know her. A long life affords one many life experiences all of which she met with grace and dignity. She watched as siblings and friends passed on, and, most painful of all, lost her son and daughter-in-law at too young an age. In 2013 Seldon preceded her in death and she has waited patiently for 7 years to join him in Glory.
The family would like to thank all those that have sent well wishes and prayers. You add to our strength. The family will have a private graveside ceremony. In lieu of flowers we ask that you make donations in Doris’ name to Greensport Baptist Church, 9260 Shoal Creek Road, Ashville Alabama 35953.
Condolences may be offered online at www.usreyfuneralhome.com. Usrey Funeral Home, Pell City, is in charge of arrangements.
