Obituary of Dr. James Weems, Jr.

Dr. James Weems, Jr., 64, of Lincoln passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at Brookwood Baptist Medical Center. His funeral service will be 5:00 pm, Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Usrey Funeral Home in Talladega with Dr. Stan Jett officiating. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow at a later date at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Dr. Weems is survived by his life partner, Rodger Adams; mother, Edith Cox Weems; sisters, Michele Truitt (Jack) and Patricia Gourdouras (Lee); several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Capt. James Weems, Sr.

Dr. Weems spent his life working as a physician, serving the children in the communities where he lived. He made it is life's work to make their lives better.

Born and raised in Sylacauga, for the past 26 years, Dr. Weems has worked as a pediatrician at Talladega Pediatrics in Talladega, Ala. Prior to that, he worked at HP Health Maintenance Organization as a primary care pediatrician and medical director in Palm Springs, California; Prairie Medical Group as a primary care pediatrician in Inglewood, California; Fort Pierce Community Health Service National Health Service Corps as a primary care pediatrician in Fort Pierce, Florida; Ellis Pediatrics as a primary care pediatrician in El Centro, California; and at Cherokee Pediatrics National Health Service Corps as a primary care pediatrician in Gaffney, S.C.

Dr. Weems received his bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama. He received his doctorate of medicine from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. He did his residency at the University of South Carolina, Richmond Memorial Hospital in Columbia, S.C.

Honorary pallbearers are the staff and providers of Talladega Pediatrics.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dr. James Weems Scholarship Fund at First Bank of Alabama.
