Obituary of Coach Charles "Chuck" Miller

Coach Charles F. “Chuck” Miller, Sr., 88, passed away peacefully in his home on September 13, 2018. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 17th, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Talladega with Robert Klotz and Dr. Rob Paul officiating. Interment will be 1:00 p.m. at Anniston Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m., Sunday, September 16th at Usrey Funeral Home.

 

Chuck graduated from Oxford High School, Jacksonville State University, and Peabody College for Teachers. As a player at Snead State College, he won two conference championships. Chuck served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, playing on the U.S. Army Basketball Team. After serving in the Army, he played basketball at both Florida State University and Jacksonville State University where he earned his bachelor degree.

 

Chuck began his coaching career at Alexandria High School as the basketball coach for five years, while also coaching football and track. He spent one year coaching basketball in Winter Garden, Florida, before coming to Talladega High School. Coach Miller was the head basketball coach at Talladega High School for twenty-six years. He also coached football, track, and baseball. He served Talladega City Schools as a History and Physical Education teacher, Principal of Graham Elementary School, and Assistant Principal of Talladega High School. One of his fondest memories was coaching the Talladega Swim Team for nine years, winning district and state championships.

 

Chuck served the Alabama High School Athletic Association on the Legislative Council for ten years and on the Central Board of Control for two terms. He is a member of the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Jacksonville State University Athletic Hall of Fame, the Calhoun County Sports Hall of Fame, and the Snead State College Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was honored as the Snead State College Alumnus of the Year. Upon his retirement, Talladega City Schools honored him by naming the Talladega High School gymnasium the Charles F. “Chuck” Miller Arena.

 

Chuck served the City of Talladega as a member of the City Council from 1987 to 1991. He was member of the Alabama Senior Olympics Basketball Team from 1995 to 1997. After retirement, he received Distinguished Service Awards from Jacksonville State University and Talladega City Schools.

 

Chuck was a member of the Talladega First Baptist Church for fifty-six years. He belonged to numerous professional organizations.

 

Chuck loved his family very much; especially his grandsons. Chuck always said he never had a real job. He loved all of the young people he taught and coached, as well as, his coworkers and the coaches with which he competed. He lived a full and prosperous life, that created so many wonderful memories for him and others.

 

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bonnie Howard Miller; two sons, Charles F. “Chucky” (Becky) Miller, Jr. and Chipley Shaun “Chip” Miller; two grandsons, Charles F. “Trey” Miller, III and Ryan (Laura) Thomas Miller; nieces and nephews, Marjorie Zellers, Darlene Nope, Charlotte Shaunnessey, Diane Spencer, Paula Kessler, Pamela Snell, Debra Camp Rushakoff, Gena Richardson, Angela Stallings, Rusty Long, Timothy Burgess, Bryan Camp, and Alan Camp.

 

Chuck is preceded in death by his son, Terry Miller and mother, Lettie Miller.

 

Pallbearers will be Charles F. Miller, III, Ryan Thomas Miller, Alan Camp, Bryan Camp, Robin Beverly, Ricky Armstrong, Jeff Ellison, Matt Storey, and Robert Burdette. Honorary Pallbearers are all of his athletes he coached while at Alexandria High School, Talladega High School, and the Talladega Swim Team.

 

The family would like to give a special thanks to Comfort Care Hospice.
