Obituary of Cranston J Nelson
Funeral services for “C.J.”Cranston J. Nelson, age 90, will be at Usrey Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, August 21, 2018. Rev. Gary Wyatt will be officiating the service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.
Mr. Nelson died on his 90th birthday at the Barton House In Nashville. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Margaret Jewell Nelson; daughter, Nancy Nelson Moore (Harold) of Nashville, TN; one granddaughter, Cyndi King; one grandson, Brandon Daniel (Susan) of Prattville, AL; and three great-grandchildren and step granddaughter and two step grandsons. He is also survived by three brothers, Q.L. Nelson (Frances) of Oxford, AL, Crawford Nelson (Linda) of Talladega, AL, and Leon Nelson of Heflin, AL.
Mr. Nelson was born in rural Cleburne County in the Micaview community, but had lived most of his life in Oxford, AL until moving to Nashville, TN in 2013. He served three years in the U.S. Air Force achieving the rank of Sargent. He served 19 months in occupied Japan after World War II. He retired from Bell South with 36 years of service.
Mr. Nelson was a long time member of First Baptist Church in Oxford. He was an ordained deacon and served in various roles in Sunday school. He also worked at First Baptist Church Oxford as a custodian for several years.
He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Cranston Nelson; and 2 great-grandsons, Hayden Lee and Dayton King; his parents, Henry and Gertie Hicks Nelson; two sisters, Mavis McLain and Marjorie Wilkinson
