Obituary of Bobby Joe Lackey, Sr.
Bobby Joe Lackey, 81, of Talladega, AL went to be with his Lord on June 16, 2018 Mr. Lackey was born April 28, 1937 in Lynch, KY to Ernest Lackey and Maude Wade. He married the love of his life, Helen Virginia Dean, on July 18, 1957. He often referred to her as his “China doll”. He attributes his understanding of the gospel of Jesus to her. He often stated “I would have been lost if it weren’t for her”.
Mr. Lackey worked at Kimberly Clark for 34 ½ years. He had many friends and stories from his time at KC. Autrey Waites is one of these friends. He faithfully took Mr. Lackey out for a Coke and conversation for almost 10 years.
Church was a vital part of Mr. Lackey’s life. He served as a deacon at Talladega Church of Christ, an elder at Sylacauga Church of Christ and Greenbrier Church of Christ and taught Sunday school in many of the churches he attended. He liked to be early to church. In fact, he had his own key in many area churches, so he could unlock the door himself.
Humor was one of Mr. Lackey’s greatest attributes. Humor is how he stayed happily married for almost 61 years, raised three children, and grandfathered 7 grandchildren. One of his favorite jokes was “here we go like a herd of turtles”. He used it at family gatherings to signify the long time it takes to get a family in the car to leave.
Mr. Lackey is survived by his wife Helen Virginia Dean Lackey, 3 children, Bobb Lackey Jr (Leigh), Benjamin Lackey, Rebecca West (Jade); 7 grandchildren Robby Lackey, Kadey Ledbetter (Landon), Colton West, Amber West, Luke West, Madison Lackey, and Caleigh Lackey; a brother, Wallace Lackey; a sister, Philis Slusher-Semones (Jessie). Mr. Lackey was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Lackey; his brother Ernest (Buddy) Lackey Jr; his sisters Velma Neal and Jean Cope.
