Obituary of Carl R. Reaves
Carl R. Reaves of Talladega, passed away peacefully at his home June 14, 2018 with his
family at his side as he went to the Lord.
Carl was married to Joyce Edmiston for 62 years and attended Talladega and Ironaton
Church of Christ. He was a devoted husband and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, Carl is survived by his daughter, Patti Reaves Burch (Dr. Tom
Burch) of Auburn, AL; grandsons, Joshua M. Riley (Eileen) of Broomfield, CO and Clay S. Riley of
Boston, MA; grandsons, Hunter C. Burch (Margaret) of Gainesville, FL, Harrison R. Burch of
Auburn, AL, and Hayden G. Burch of Auburn, AL.
He is also survived by his brother Ernest Payne Reaves (Mellody) of LaGrange, GA; his
sister Brenda Reaves Fetner (Klein) of Wadley, AL; aunts Mae Sutton Lipham of Hugeley, AL and
Joyce Sutton White of Valley, AL. He is fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews,
cousins, and in-laws.
Carl is preceded in death by his daughter, Pamela Reaves Riley Peters of Talladega, his
parents of Wedowee, and brother Junior Wilson Reaves of Lineville, AL.
A native of Randolph County, Alabama, Carl was born November 1, 1934 to the late
Wilson and Beulah (Sutton) Reaves. He graduated from Randolph County High School and
completed the Belk Management Development Programs. Carl joined Belk Hudson in Talladega
in 1953 as men's wear buyer and assistant store manager. He was promoted to manager in
1970 and was later promoted to Vice-President of Belk-Hudson Alabama Group and served in
that capacity until his retirement in 1988. Carl joined AIDB, Alabama School for the Blind, in
1989 for another 20-year career. He was a past member of the Merchants' Association and
Greater Talladega Area Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Exchange Club, and active in
serving in different levels for the North Talladega United Fund.
Visitation will be held June 16, 10:00 a.m. at Usrey Funeral Home with service to follow
at 11:00 a.m. with Dale Dison, Ronald Garrett, and Payne Reaves officiating. Private graveside
service to follow at Pine Hill Memorial Park. Grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to "Pages from Pam." c/o
Hayden Burch, 2176 Springwood Drive, Auburn AI, 36830. For the past two years, Hayden has
collected and given a bag of new books to every child in second grade in the Talladega School
System, in honor of his aunt Pam Reaves Peters, who was a dedicated elementary school
teacher.
