Obituary of Charles Lee Hunter
Charles Lee Hunter, 84, went home to be with the Lord on March 12, 2018, at his residence in Winterboro, Alabama. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Peggy (Grogan) Hunter; daughters Sherry Phurrough of Orlando, Florida; Vicki Shirley of Winterboro; son Reggie Hunter of Talladega; 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; sister Carol Williams of Scottsburg, Indiana and brother Don Hunter of Purdue, Indiana. He was preceded in death by son Joey Hunter and grandson Jason Machen.
Mr. Hunter was born on April 1, 1933, in Orleans, Indiana to Frank and Dora Hunter and was 1 of 11 children. In 1953 he joined the Army and was stationed at Ft. McClelland, during which time he met and married Peggy and remained an Alabama native for the remainder of his life. He retired from American Talc/Rio Tinto after 33 years as a maintenance supervisor.
Mr. Hunter was known to friends as Charlie and was always willing to help family, friends and neighbors with his "jack of all trades" skills. It was a familiar sight to see him mowing his always perfectly manicured lawn which he took great pride in. He leaves a huge void in his family and neighborhood which will be impossible to fill.
Visitation will be on Friday, March 16 from 6 to 8 at Usrey Funeral Home in Talladega. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 17 at 11:00 am also at Usrey with Pastor Brian Blakely of Plainview Baptist Church officiating. Mr. Hunter's final resting place will be at Pine Hill Cemetery.Online condolences may be made at www.usreyfuneralhome.com, with Usrey Funeral Home Talladega directing services.
