Kathryn N. “Ginny” Sims
Kathryn Virginia “Ginny” Netherland Sims died on June 23, 2016. She is survived by her children Amy Locklin (John) of Talladega, Dr. Marion Sims, Jr. (Regina) of Birmingham and Ginger Jefferson (David) of Birmingham; sixteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Marion Sims and much-loved daughter Judy Sims Walls.
She was a graduate of the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing and received her B.S. from Samford University. A longtime member of the Talladega community she gave unselfishly of her time and love to countless friends, strangers and organizations in the area and beyond. Born in Akron Ohio to a family with roots in the Tennessee Mountains, she was guided by the abiding faith of her mother, Edith Boyd Netherland, and tempered by the trials of the Depression. She knew from an early age that she wanted to take care of people and moved to Birmingham in the late 1940s to attend nursing school. She worked for more than 60 years soothing aches, healing wounds and listening with love to the heartache and joys of her patients. Nursing was not just a job for her it was a way of life. She will be remembered as a force of nature, full of energy and unstoppable in her desire to help others. She would want you to honor her memory by doing something kind for someone else.
Many thanks go to her faithful friends, family members and caregivers. The last few years have been challenging for the woman known as ‘GoGo’. Today, we rest assured that she is with her Father.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 26 at 2:30pm at First Baptist Church in Talladega with visitation to follow in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Baptist Church, Talladega or the Ida V. Moffett Scholarship in the School of Nursing at Samford University.
“Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come…Her children arise up and call her blessed.”
