Obituary of Brenda Jones Burt

Graveside rites for Brenda Jones Burt, 73, of Talladega will be Friday, September 18, 2015 at 11:00 am at Oak Hill Cemetery, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Talladega. Dr. Rob Paul and Rev. Lee Ann Scarbrough will officiate. Her family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00-8:00 pm at Usrey Funeral Home of Talladega. Mrs. Burt passed away at her home September 15, 2015. She was a native and lifelong resident of Talladega. Having graduated in 1960 from Talladega High School, she worked briefly for the Talladega City Board of Education, followed later by two terms of service as city councilwoman, and 29 years as Director of the Arc of North Talladega County. All the while, she gave extensively of herself in volunteer service to further various organizations including the Talladega Junior Welfare League, Heritage Hall Museum, Historic Talladega Ritz Theatre, Antique Talladega, Talladega First, Talladega Pilgrimage Council, Rainbow Omega, and Cheaha Regional Mental Health Board. Professional and social affiliations included Pilot Club and Talladega Study Club. Central Baptist Church provided spiritual nurturing throughout her childhood and youth. Upon her marriage, she moved her membership to First Baptist Church, her husband’s church home. There, she was active in women’s mission organizations, and sang in the choir and taught 4th grade Sunday school for over 50 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alonzo “Lonnie” and Evelyn Pope Jones, and sister, Barbara Jones McWilliams. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Walter Burt, son Michael Burt, daughter Lisa (Chandler) Wallace, grandson Jonah Wallace, sister Sandra (Bill) Hurst, and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jonathan Burt, Tony Chandler, David Hurst, Joey Hurst, David Burt, Ken Stratton, Steve Stratton, and Scott Weiss. Honorary pallbearers represent the breadth of impact of the Mrs. Burt’s life on her community. The family wishes to express gratitude to the staff of Lakeside Hospice for their compassion and kindness during Mrs. Burt’s illness.
