Obituary of Virgil Chappell

Virgil Chappell, 89 passed away peacefully on August 23, 2015. His family will receive friends to celebrate his life at Usrey Funeral Home Wednesday August 26, 2105 from 11:30 am – 12:45 pm Graveside services will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery at 1:00pm. Mr. Chappell was a native of Sylacauga and longtime resident of Talladega. He was preceded in death by his wife Cleo S. Chappell, parents Oliver and Ida Bedford Chappell, brothers Lee Chappell, O.B. Chappell, Buddy Chappell, Marvin Chappell, Johnny Chappell and Donald Chappell, sisters Annie Mae C. King and Anita C. Brown. He is survived by his daughters Carolyn C. Carmichael of Atlanta, Ga., Connie Springfield and husband Wayne of Livingston, Al. and Clovia Chappell of Birmingham, Al. grandchildren Kyle Edmonds and wife Mary Grace of Livingston, Al., Meredith E. Payne and husband Stephen of Birmingham, Al. and Thomas Carmichael of Atlanta, Ga., great grandchildren Laine and Pierce Edmonds. Virgil began his career at Wright Store and retired at Spears Pharmacy in Talladega. He served on many city boards. He was a board member of Talladega Super Speedway and served as Campaign County Chairman for several Governors. He and his wife were honored in 1996 by the Talladega Chamber of Commerce with volunteer of the year award. Mr. Chappell organized the Talladega Christmas Parade from 1961 until 2003.He was honored in 2007 with a Virgil Chappell Day. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Virgil never met a stranger and always had a smile on his face. Mr. Chappell moved to Sumter Health and Rehab in 2012 to be closer to his daughter Connie. The family would like to express their appreciation and love to Dr. Todd Vaughan, CNAs, nurses and all employed at Sumter Health and Rehab. A special note of thanks is given to Cal Jean Jones. Our appreciation is also extended to Comfort Care and the nurses. All helped make his life easier and happier. Pallbearers will be Roy McCaig, James Gorey, Ray Miller, James Murner, Tommy Spears, Neal Rodgers and Buddy Wesley. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to your favorite charity.
