Charles Dewitt Pope
May 10, 1930 - July 2, 2015
On July 2, 2015, Charles Dewitt Pope went home to be with the Lord after suffering for many years
with Alzheimer's disease.
Charles was a lifelong resident of Talladega, Alabama. He graduated from Talladega High School where
he played football. He also attended Jacksonville State University. Charles proudly served our country
for 20 years as a Captain in the Army National Guard and was called to active duty during the Korean
War.
Charles began his career in the textile industry as a sweeper at the age of 17. Through hard work and
dedication, Charles retired from Image Textile Manufacturing in 1995 as Vice President.
Charles and his family were active members of Trinity United Methodist Church, where Charles spent
many years as a church leader and Sunday school teacher. He was also a Gideon, a Mason, and spent
many years sharing his faith in the Prison Ministry. Charles also served his community as a member of
the Talladega City Council and was proud to have a city park named in his honor.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Albert Pope and Minnie Lee Pope, and his three
brothers, Donald Pope, Benny Pope, and Nicky Pope.
Charles is survived by his loving wife, Flora Norred Pope; two sisters, Bobbie Pope Tipton and Priscilla
Pope Arnold; four adoring children and their spouses, Mary Lee (David) Mostella, Kim Pope, Wes (Fran)
Pope, Matt (Nan) Pope; six grandchildren, Cal Mostella, Amy Mostella (Allen) Graham, Bethany Pope
(Jason) DiSalvo, Jonathan Pope, Ashley Pope (Andy) Smith, Benjamin Pope; eight great-grandchildren,
and countless nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Charles was laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery in a graveside service surrounded by his loving family. In
lieu of flowers, a gift to the charity of your choice can be made in Charles' honor.
