Obituary of Charlie Andrew Chappell

Mr. Chappell was a native of Kansas and attended Gallaudet Day School in St. Louis. He
moved to Talladega at the age of 12 with his parents, William C. and Grace Galloway
Chappell. He graduated from ASD in 1952 and then attended Gallaudet College. He was
inducted in ASD Hall of Fame in 1991, received NAD Golden Hand Award, June 2003,
an Honorary Lt. Col. for the AL State Militia, April 1977 for Gov. George Wallace. He
received the AAD Distinguished Service Award, 1985, received AAD Loyal Service
Award, 1987. He was a lifetime blood donor contributing more than 30 gallons, a long
time leader in the Deaf and Hearing Community, and an honorary lifetime member of
AAD. He also worked at Bemis Company and AL Institute for Deaf and Blind. He was an
avid St. Louis Cardinals and Alabama Football fan.
Charles is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gloria Perhai Chappell, children, Randall A. Chappell (Sheila), Rebecca C. Taylor (Danny), Rosemary C. Guy (Ron), grandchildren,
Summer Chappell, Andrew Chappell, Zoe T. Rose, William "BJ" Chappell, Krystal Thompson, Ross Harry, Abbie Taylor, Ryan Chappell, great-grandchildren, Bayleigh
Akins and McKenzie Rose, 5-step-grandchildren and numerous step-great
grandchildren, sister-in-law, Lucille Chappell, nieces, Pat Williams and Brenda Battles,
nephews, Charles Chappell, Harry Hellon and Billy Hellon.
Pallbearers will be Andrew, William and James Ryan Chappell, Ross Harry, Eric Guy and Patrick Robinson. AAD Members will serve as honorary pallbearers.
