Mary Ann McMillan Still

November 22, 1921 – March 27, 2018

Mary Ann McMillan Still (Mimi to her family) of Greenville, SC, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died at age 96 on March 27, 2018 after a courageous battle against old age. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.

Mary Ann was born and raised in Talladega, Alabama, the daughter of Allen Gray McMillan, Sr. and Mary Dobbs McMillan. She attended Huntington College and The University of Alabama and subsequently graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Elementary Education. She was a wartime bride, marrying a dashing young 1st Lieutenant in the Army Infantry, James Gordon Still, Jr., in December of 1944.  Mary Ann and Jim, who was affectionately known as “that Yankee” by the Alabama family, were married for 58 wonderful years until his death in 2002. They had an adventurous life together, raising two children, living in a number of states due to career advancement, and traveling extensively in their later years.

While Mary Ann taught school in her younger years, most of her life was dedicated to her family and home. She was a strong and fearless woman, having once confronted and chased out a burglar in her Atlanta home, as well as being an accomplished musician and artist. Mary Ann was a true Southern Lady who did not know a stranger and always put the needs and comfort of others ahead of her own.

Mary Ann is preceded in death by her husband Jim and brother Allen Gray McMillan, Jr. Surviving family members include daughter Mary Ann Still Billig of Greenville, SC and son Dr. James Gordon Still, III of Raleigh, NC, six grandchildren (Dr. Anne Shick, Amy Sutherland, Beth McAllister, Allen Billig, Dr. Gray Still, and Bryan Still) and eleven great grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service followed by burial will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, April 8 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Talladega, Alabama. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to The Thornwell Home & School for Children, Clinton, SC.
