Obituary of Carolyn W Roberts

     Mrs. Carolyn W. Roberts, formerly of Talladega, Alabama passed away on September 25, 2017 in Auburn, AL.   She was born on January 4, 1930 in Montgomery, Alabama to John Byron and Laura Warren. She graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1948 and from Huntingdon College in 1952 in Home Economics.  Upon graduation, she began work as a home economist in Montgomery, with the Alabama Gas Corporation (Alagasco).  It was through an assignment one day in “the Valley” that she met the love of her life, Roy Franklin Roberts, Sr. in the spring of 1953 who was also empolyed by Alabama Gas Corporation.  They were married on November 14, 1953.  Their first home was in Tuscaloosa, AL. In 1958, Roy was transferred to the Talladega Gas district, and Talladega became their home.

     Mrs. Roberts taught in the Talladega school system at R.L. Young from 1964 until 1977.  She earned her Masters degree in School Administration in 1976 from Jacksonville State University and in the fall of 1977 became the Principal of R.L. Young Elementary School where she remained until her retirement in August, 1990, having also earned her AA in Education, also from Jacksonville State, in 1982.

     In Talladega, she was active as a Brownie Troop leader, involved in Boy Scouts, and the PTA programs of Graham Elementary, Dixon Junior High, Talladega High School, as well as R.L. Young Elementary. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and taught in the Primary Department. She was a past member of the Holly Garden Club, Talladega Study Club, Talladega City Education Association, Alabama Education Association, National Education Association, District 5 Elementary Principals Association and Delta Kappa Gamma, (Gamma Mu chapter) Professional Association of Women Educators.

     She is preceded in death by her parents, John Byron and Laura Warren; her husband Roy F. Roberts Sr.; and her son-in-law Richard David McClure.  She is survived by her daughter, Laura Sue McClure of Jackson Mississippi and her daughters Carolyn Virginia and Rachael Juliette, both of Washington D.C.;  David Roberts and his wife Kim and their daughters, Meaghan and her husband Brandon, and Morghan, all of Auburn Alabama; R. Frank Roberts, Jr., M.D. and his wife Gracie of Huntsville, AL and their children, Savannah and her husband Sean of Atlanta Georgia, Callie of Birmingham, Al and Franklin, III of Auburn AL.

     Visitation is from 10:30am to 12pm. Thursday, September 28th in the church parlor at First United Methodist Church, Talladega, Al with service to follow at 12 noon in the sanctuary, with Pastor Gary T. Ward officiating. Graveside rites will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Usrey Funeral Home will be directing.
