Obituary of Jimmy Lamar Ashley

~ Jimmy Lamar Ashley, 70, of Ragland, Alabama passed away on August 5, 2017.

 He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Austin Ashley, Jr., and by his mother Oberia Layton Ashley. 

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Shirley Ashley; two sons, Chris (Abbie) Ashley and Matthew Ashley; one granddaughter, Nora Helen Ashley; brother, Carl (Nancy) Ashley; several nieces and nephews;  and by his beloved dog, Coco.

Jimmy was a veteran of the US Air Force.  He served from 1968 through 1972 which included multiple tours during the Vietnam War as part of the Strategic Air Command, Detachment 3, 1st Combat Evaluation Group.

Jimmy retired from National Cement Company of Ragland in 2003.  He served as president of the Local 44 Union for many years.  He also served as a member of the Ragland City Council and as a member of the Water Board.  Jimmy also worked part time for Echols Metal of Ohatchee for 13 years.

 He loved working on automobiles, riding motorcycles and going to NASCAR races.

 Jimmy's family would like to thank the staff at The Village at Cook Springs, especially those of Woodlawn Hall, and also the staff of Oasis Hospice that cared for Jimmy during his final days.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 am Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at Usrey Funeral Home, Pell City, with the Rev. Doug Ford officiating.  Interment will follow at Ragland Methodist Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5 - 7 pm at the funeral home.

 

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Alzheimers Research in memory of Mr. Ashley to Alzheimers of Central Alabama, P.O. Box 2273, Birmingham, AL 35201
