Carl Berton Christian Obituary

Rev. Carl Berton Christian, age 93 of Pell City, AL and a native of Mobile, AL, peacefully departed this life on Sunday, June 7, 2026, from complications of cancer.


Carl was born on December 5, 1932, in Wilmer, Alabama to Cleve and Ida Christian. He was the youngest of 9 children.


Carl was called to the ministry and was ordained to preach in December 1958. The early years of his ministry were spent as a missionary. Most every weekend Carl and his family would travel to homes, store fronts and prisons to share God’s word. He pastored 9 different churches and was instrumental in building a new sanctuary at 2 of the churches.


While living in Louisiana, Carl began teaching school. He received an undergraduate degree in education and a triple master’s in education from Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.


Carl joined the Navy in 1950 and was stationed on the U.S. Elderado during the Korean War. He was very proud of his time in the service and thankful to have lived at Colonel Robert L. Howard Veterans Home for the past 4 years. He shared the gospel at the V.A. Home and was part of several Bible Studies on a weekly basis.


Carl is survived by his four children; Bianca (Robert) Outlaw of Chelsea, AL, Jim Christian of Daphne, AL, Grayling (Janice) Christian of Mobile, AL, and Tanja (Cliff) Warren of Mobile, AL, eight grandchildren; Shane Williamson, Amanda (Bret) Lybrand, Amber (Thomas) Shea, Colby (Emily) Christian, Taylor Warren, Caylee Christian, Mary Claire McNair, and Matthew (Elizabeth) Outlaw, eleven great grandchildren, Ashley (Eric) Lawrence, Libby, Ella, Will and Millie Lybrand, Hunter Christian, Tommy Ross, Eleanor Grace Christian, Amelia Shea, Graycen and Margot McNair, nephews, nieces and a host of friends and church members.


Rev. Christian is predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Laverne Taylor Christian, his parents and siblings.


Graveside services with military honors will be held at Howell’s Cemetery, Lucedale, MS., on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. CDT. All are welcome. Rev. Paul Armstrong will be officiating.

We also want to thank Colonel Robert L Howard Veterans Home Domiciliary staff and residents for your love and support during Carl’s illness.
