Joseph Virgil Gupton Obituary

Joseph Virgil Gupton, age 88, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026.

It is with deep love and gratitude that we remember Joe. His life was marked by kindness , hard work, faith, and a genuine love for people.

Joe was born on November 3, 1937 in Shoal Creek Valley, AL, and grew up in the Ashville area. He carried the beauty and values of the valley with him throughout his life. No matter where the road led, he was always drawn back to Shoal Creek Valley. He treasured every opportunity to return and visit the place he loved so dearly.

After serving his country in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in Alaska as an aircraft electrician, he built a life defined by dedication and adventure. His years as a truck driver took him through all the mainland states, and he became known for his remarkable sense of direction — able to navigate nearly any city without hesitation. The open road suited his independent spirit, and he loved sharing stories from his travels.

Joe married the love of his life, Joyce, in 1996. They lived in Lewisburg, Kentucky and in Big Spring, Texas, eventually moving back to his beloved valley in 2020. Though he traveled far and wide, some of his greatest joys were found close to home. He loved tending a garden and generously sharing its produce with family, friends, and neighbors. Many will fondly remember his specialty Figgy jam, homemade tea cakes from his Aunt Della Mae's recipe, and the warmth that always accompanied a visit to deliver these to friends and neighbors.

He enjoyed quiet pleasures as well — especially working crossword puzzles, which reflected his sharp mind and curiosity. His faith remained an important part of his life, and he was active in his church community, where his gentle spirit and thoughtful acts of kindness touched many lives. Children especially looked forward to seeing him arrive with pockets full of Tootsie Rolls ready to hand out with a smile. He was also a proud member of the Masons in Kentucky and valued the fellowship, service, and lifelong friendships it brought to his life.

He will be remembered for his steady presence, servant’s heart, and the simple ways he made others feel loved and welcomed. His legacy lives on in the memories shared around family tables, in gardens lovingly tended, and in the countless lives blessed by his generosity and faith. Joe’s life was a testament to faith, love, and quiet service. He leaves behind a legacy of devotion that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Joe is predeceased by his parents, John Excel and Eva Viola Gupton; and his brothers, Charles Gupton, Robert Gupton and Abner Gupton.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; son, Joseph (Kellye) V. Gupton, Jr; daughter, Tracy Gupton Haynie; stepson, David (Mary) Knight; stepdaughter, Brendi (Dave) Trotter; grandchildren, Tori Knight, Rebekah Hunt, Tyler Martin, Cooper Martin, Spree Haynie, Jenny Marie Trotter; great-grandchildren, Kodie, Caleb and Caiden; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sisters, Clara Connell and Lorene Walker; and his brother, David Gupton.

A memorial service will be held at Greensport Baptist Church at 4:00 p.m. on May 29, 2026, with visitation for one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Greensport Baptist Church (Ashville, AL) Building Fund.
