Bennie Sue Walker Obituary

Bennie Sue Walker, age 91, passed away peacefully at her home on the morning of April 27th, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and devotion to her family, faith, and community.

Born and raised in Cropwell, Alabama, Bennie Sue was the beloved daughter of Frank and Lena Staples. From a young age, she developed a strong work ethic, balancing her love of school with helping her family on the farm. Some of her fondest childhood memories included picking cotton under the warm Alabama sun and swimming in “the river,” moments that shaped her resilient and joyful spirit.

Bennie Sue attended Pell City School and later married the love of her life, Don Walker Jr. Together, they shared 52 wonderful years of marriage, building a life rooted in faith, family, and lasting legacy. Their home in the beautiful Shoal Creek Valley became a place of warmth and welcome, where Bennie Sue raised her family and spent 37 years tending chickens and nurturing the land she loved.

She is survived by her sons, Donald (Cindy) Walker and Steve (Gail) Walker. She was a proud “Mawmaw” not only to her grandchildren—Jason Walker; Joy (Robert) Ray; Heather (Mark) Lee; Heath (Amanda) Walker; Hannah (David) McCormick; and Crystal (Ben) Gersh—but truly a Mawmaw to many, as her love ran deep and extended far beyond her immediate family. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren: Tyler Ray, Payton Ray, Cade Walker, Avery Ray, Blaire Lee, Corbin Walker, Brennan Grace Lee, Ben Lee, Marlie Sue Walker, Camden Walker, Robert Jordan “RJ” Swindall, John Henry McWaters, and Riley Gersh. She was preceded in death by her great-grandchild, Justin Hyatt.

Bennie Sue was known for her servant’s heart and her ability to make anyone feel at home. She expressed her love through cooking, always ensuring there was something special for everyone who walked through her door. Her banana pudding and “Mawmaw’s cornbread” were cherished favorites, and she rarely let anyone leave without a sweet treat.

A true woman of many talents, Bennie Sue could drive a tractor with the best of them and took great pride in her flourishing garden and beautiful flowers. She loved cutting grass and working in the hay field alongside her husband, a reflection of her tireless spirit and deep love for the life they built together. She was also an avid quilter and found joy in the simple art of ironing—always with plenty of starch. Her hands were rarely still, reflecting a life of dedication and care in all she did.

Deeply rooted in her faith, Bennie Sue loved singing in the choir and faithfully attending Friendship Baptist Church. She lived with a servant’s heart, striving to love others the way Christ loved the church. She was a simple lady whose life spoke volumes through her kindness, humility, and unwavering devotion. She always had the biggest smile, one that warmly welcomed everyone she met.

She cherished her close relationship with her sister and best friend, Peggy Turner. Bennie Sue was preceded in death by her loving husband, Don Walker Jr., and her son, Doug Walker; her parents; her sister, Peggy Turner; her brothers, Charlie, Johnny, Raymond, Jimmy, Carlos, Frank, and Blair Staples; and her great-grandchild, Justin Hyatt.

Throughout her life, Bennie Sue remained active in many community organizations across St. Clair County, always seeking ways to serve others and give back.

Bennie Sue Walker will be remembered for her strength, her gentle spirit, and her unwavering love for her family and her Lord. Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured and the countless lives she touched.
