Margaret “Greta” Adair was born on February 5, 1931, in Larkhall, Lanarkshire, Scotland to William Douglas and Margaret “Peggy” Douglas. She was the oldest of three children.
Greta lived in Scotland until she married Frank Adair Jr. in 1956. They were stationed in several states during his career in the United States Air Force. After his retirement they moved to Lincoln, AL to be near family.
When Greta was young, she loved to go to dance salons in several towns near her home, Hamilton, Glasgow, and Edinburgh, to name a few. She was a very popular dance partner as she was graceful and poised. She considered entering ballroom dancing contests, but in the end, she did it mainly for pleasure.
After moving to the States she enjoyed working at several jobs, taking on new ones every time her husband was transferred. While he was stationed at Langley, she worked for NASA during the time of the Space Race and Apollo Missions, including Neil Armstrong’s walk on the Moon.
When her husband retired from the USAF, they both worked at Anniston Army Depot. She was able to join him on his assignment to Germany that lasted three years. While there, they traveled around Germany, many other countries in Europe, and visited family in Scotland frequently. They were also able to go to Holland regularly to visit his sister and family that were stationed there at the same time. They had amazing weekend trips and vacations, seeing many beautiful places and historical sites.
Greta had many interests and hobbies. She loved playing cards with friends and family. She liked to watch quiz shows and was very good at answering the questions! She worked with the high school band boosters, including being their president. She participated in the football booster club, working in the concession stand for home games, and she was the coordinator for the local high school beauty pageant for an interim. Additionally, she was on the Lincoln Public Library Board, a position she held for over forty years until her death.
Once she and her husband retired from the Depot, they loved a road trip, often crossing the US or going to nearby states for entertainment.
Once Frank passed away, she began to travel with her girls. She readily agreed to road trips up the Eastern Seaboard, to Michigan, the Dakotas, the northern states, out West, or to the south of Florida. She was game for all of it. She enjoyed cruising as well. She would pack her suitcase and jump in the back seat whenever a trip was arranged. Mom never met a stranger and people loved to talk to her to hear her Scottish accent that never faded, even after 69 years of living in the states. She loved her church family at Lincoln Methodist. She also went to her daughter's church, Eastaboga Baptist, for the senior adult events. Monthly she went to several area nursing homes, visiting with residents and listening to her daughter, Linda, sing. She had a tremendous sense of adventure and fun, and she laughed often and easily. She greatly loved her Scottish and American family and spent time with them whenever possible. Her giving, loving heart expanded to include many of her daughters’ friends as family, they usually called her “Mom” too.
