William Gerald Mattheis, 79, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026, in Birmingham, Alabama, with his beloved wife by his side. He was born on October 10, 1946, in Vallejo, California.
William proudly served his country as a Vietnam War veteran, a chapter of his life that shaped his deep sense of duty, resilience, and integrity. Following his military service, he dedicated his professional career to public service, retiring as Deputy Director with the United States Department of the Navy, where he worked within the Environmental Readiness Program. His career reflected his commitment to protecting both national interests and environmental responsibility.
William was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry Mattheis and Velma Lucille Mattheis (Lyons).
He is survived by his loving wife, Karen Mattheis; his children, Ashley Mattheis and William Mattheis; his stepdaughter, Constance Nagy, and her husband, Jason Nagy; and his cherished grandchildren, Max Nagy and Cora Nagy.
William will be remembered for his steadfast character, quiet strength, and lifelong dedication to service—both to his country and to his family. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the family who loved him deeply.
