With a warm and heavy heart, we share that Michael “Mike” Phillip Allen passed away on January 7, 2026 at the age of 77 at his home in Pell City, Alabama.
Mike was born on March 26, 1948 to, John G. Allen and Sarah L. Allen. Mike was raised in Tuscaloosa and spent his younger years working at a movie theater and helped manage a local hotel at the age of 14. After he graduated Tuscaloosa High School, he went on to receive a business degree from Montevallo University. Afterwards he served in the Alabama Air National Guard while beginning his legacy career in pharmaceutical and orthopedic sales and research. Mike started many more successful businesses throughout his career that included owning a restaurant and later an arcade in Riverside.
Mike was known for his sharp business mind and entrepreneurial spirit, but he also knew how to enjoy life. He loved dune buggy riding in the woods with friends and family, rarely missed cheering on Alabama football, and found great joy and camaraderie around a pool table. One of his most favorite past times was singing old gospel hymns. Mike was proud to be a member of the New Life Methodist Church. He also served on the Riverside City Council and the Pell City Zoning Board. His love for his wife, Ellen, of 47 years is what he was most proud of throughout his life because she was his rock that kept him grounded through every season of life.
He is survived by his wife, Lou “Ellen” Allen, two daughters, Lori Allen Wallace and Andrea Allen Pettigrew (Bryan), son, John M. Allen, three grandsons, Alex Freeze, Carter Freeze, and Trevor Wallace. And his brother Gil Allen (Elaine), sister, Kay Bunn, mother-in-law, Ladora Painter, two sister in laws, Dratha Neumann, and Debra Criswell (Joe), as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Mike will be remembered for his intelligence, loyalty, sense of humor, and the deep love he had for his family and friends. His presence will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on through those who loved him.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 10, 2026 at 11 am at Usrey Funeral Home in Pell City with visitation for friends and family from 10 to 11 am prior to the service. A private family service will be subsequently held at Memory Hill Gardens in Tuscaloosa.
