Charlotte Davie Gunn was called Home on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the age
of 89. She passed peacefully in her home in Pensacola, FL surrounded by loved ones.
Born as an “April Fools” girl in Lincoln, AL to James Otis and Zula Gray Davie, Charlotte
was a graduate of Lincoln High School. She earned her education degree from the
University of Alabama and her Masters in Educational Leadership from Troy University.
As a teenager her love of sports was already developed. She was a cheerleader and
during summers she was a lifeguard at the town pool. She also worked at the
recreational center in Talladega. Prior to beginning her career, she taught swimming to
underprivileged children at a church camp in Birmingham, AL. She then dedicated her
career to teaching, coaching, and mentoring middle school aged children for 3 and a
half decades in Pensacola, FL at Ferry Pass Junior High and Brentwood Middle School.
She started her career as a Physical Education teacher where she not only taught, but
also coached cheerleading, gymnastics, and track. She started a trick jump rope team
that performed at many venues. When she physically could not do what she asked the
girls to do, she started teaching science. After retirement, she volunteered at the Roy
Hyatt Environmental Center. While she was teaching and for years after retirement she
often received phone calls from ex-students thanking her for the “life” lessons she
instilled in them.
Charlotte had other passions as well. As an outdoor person, she loved the water and
therefore was an excellent swimmer and water-skier. She loved outdoor entertaining at
her home. She also found much pleasure in gardening, flower arranging, and being a
Bama football fan. You could find her on Fall Saturdays watching and cheering for Bama
either at the stadium or in her living room.
She was devoted to her family. Nothing gave her more pleasure than spending time
with her two daughters (Angela and Kimberly), granddaughter (Alisha) and her two
great grandchildren (Kinsley and Carter). She was approached by a company to work
for them traveling the country teaching others how to do trick jump rope routines, how to
begin a team and write a book. Charlotte turned down the opportunity in order to be in
town full time raising her daughters and being a wife.
She was a very independent, strong-willed, determined lady who met every challenge
with a fighting spirit. This was evident up until she passed.
Her biggest love was for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As a child she accepted
Christ as her Savior. As an adult she was a member of Olive Baptist Church where she
taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and coached youth softball. She strived
to live a life that showed her love of Christ.
Charlotte is preceded in death by her father, James Otis Davie; her mother, Zula Gray
Davie; her brother, Dr. Clayton Davie; and her daughter, Angela Long.
She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Gunn; her granddaughter, Alisha Baxter; her two great
grandchildren, Kinsley and Carter Baxter; and many other family members.
