Sam was a hardworking man who served for 4 years in the Navy on the U.S. Orleck. As a young child, he worked on his parent’s farm in East Alabama. His family lovingly called him “Bud.” After his years of service, he was a pattern maker until he retired after 36 years at Southern Precision. He married Shirley on July 5, 1957 in Anniston, Alabama in a double wedding with his sister, Jo Ann who married Robert Tankersley. They were married for 65 years.

Shirley and Sam started their life together in California, where they lived for two years before moving back to Alexandria, Alabama. They moved to Birmingham, where they raised their three children, and he eventually became known as Pops to his grandchildren.

Family was most important to Sam. He enjoyed boating with his family and teaching his kids to water ski. A day on the water was a perfect day. Sam loved to travel with the Campers and Dancers, where he would swing all of his friends around the square as they danced. He never missed an episode of The Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune or his evening Bourbon and word search books.

Sam was a member at Ridgecrest Baptist Church and later moved his membership to Bethel Baptist Church in Moody, AL. Sam and Shirley found entertainment in attending gospel concerts all over the area.

There will be a graveside service at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 2, 2025 at the cemetery next to Eureka Methodist Church in Lincoln, Alabama. Usrey Funeral home Talladega will direct.
