Barbara Bakane Mathis Obituary

Barbara Bakane Mathis, age 50, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on June 21, 1974, Barbara was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, and teacher whose warmth, compassion, and quiet strength will be forever cherished.

Barbara’s life was centered on faith, family, and selfless love. Her greatest joy came from her children and grandchildren, and she nurtured each of them with unwavering care and affection. Her grace in life—and in illness—was an inspiration to all who knew her.

She is survived by her beloved husband, James Ray Mathis, and their cherished children: Louis Christian Mathis, James Kelly Mathis (Julie), Pamela Marie Mathis, Rebecca Perkins (Andrew), and Chelsee Leighanna Busbee (Joey). Barbara was a proud and loving grandmother to Mollie Rae Perkins, Ava Jade Busbee, Isla Grayce Busbee, and Rowan Busbee; parents, Louis and Pam Bakane, her sister, Kelly Rose Cardenas (John Henry); and numerous nieces and nephews who adored her.

Barbara was preceded in death by her grandparents; her beloved sister, Elizabeth Hope Bakane Spradley; her niece, Elizabeth Kaitlyn Freeman; and her great-aunt, Sally Bakane.

A funeral mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, with Father Bill Lucas officiating. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the administration and employees of the Pell City Board of Education and to the parishioners of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church for their kindness, support, and prayers during Barbara’s illness.
