Barbara Sue Stephens Hurst, 77, of Talladega, Alabama, departed this earth to eternally be with her Lord and Savior on May 8, 2025, at her home in Talladega, Alabama. Visitation will be held on May 11, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on May 12, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Munford Church of Christ in Munford, Alabama. Celebration of Life will be held at Munford Church of Christ on May 12, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. with Rusty Stephens of Lincoln Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Munford, Alabama. Usrey

Barbara was born in Talladega, Alabama, to Lowell and Sue Haynes Stephens on May 29, 1947. She went to Munford High School and graduated in 1965. She earned a Licensed Practical Nurse Certificate from Northwest Alabama Community College in 1991, an associate in applied science degree in Registered Nursing from Northwest Alabama Community College in 1992, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of North Alabama in 1998, and a Master of Science in Nursing from Samford University in 2000. Barbara served as a nurse in settings ranging from home healthcare to nursing homes and state correctional facilities. She completed her career as an auditor with The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
She enjoyed music, singing, and traveling across the United States and abroad. Barbara was talented and liked cutting and styling hair, gardening, sewing dresses, and canning vegetables. Barbara was a devoted Christian who taught children’s Bible classes, Vacation Bible School, and Ladies Day gatherings, and served the Church in many other capacities. She was selected as Snead, Alabama’s 1982 “Mother of the Year.” She was a Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing member.
Barbara Hurst is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Ronnie L. Hurst of Talladega, Alabama; her son, Wayne (Ellen) Hurst of Jacksonville, Alabama; daughters, April (Greg) Harbin of Winfield, Alabama; Amber (John) Sullivan of Walls, Mississippi; Alana (Angel) Hurst of Spokane Valley, Washington; her brother, Joe Tom (Revonda) Stephens of Munford, Alabama; her brother, Rusty Stephens of Munford, Alabama; her sister, Kathy (Tommy) Shropshire of Munford, Alabama; her sister, Jane (Lionel) Burns of Munford, Alabama; her brother, Charles (Kellie) Dunaway of Ardmore, Alabama; six grandchildren: Kendall Harbin, Will Hurst, John P. Sullivan, III, Reagan Sullivan, Andrea Harbin, and Owen Sullivan and three great-grandchildren: Josey Rae Hurst, John P. Sullivan, IV and Alexander Sullivan.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Lowell and Sue Haynes Stephens of Munford, Alabama; her daughter, Andrea Hurst of Guin, Alabama; her brother, Jerry Stephens of Carrollton, Georgia; her sister, Sara Nell (Rickey) Watts of Munford, Alabama; and her brother, Timothy Stephens of Munford, Alabama.
Active pallbearers will be Kendall Harbin, John P. Sullivan III, Joe Stephens, Reagan Sullivan, Owen Sullivan and Chad Watts. Will Hurst, a Casey Burns, Jeremy Burns and Steve Kirk are honorary pallbearers.
The family wishes to extend gratitude to the Orlando Health Citizens Hospital and Orlando Health Walker Hospital, where Barbara received exceptional quality care. The family is thankful for the compassionate support provided by Compassus hospice care providers, Ms. Shana Coiner, RN, and Ms. Marissa Ritten, Aide and respite provider, Ms. Tonett Wells. The family is grateful to the Munford Church of Christ for using their facilities and the Usury Funeral Home, which compassionately and professionally handled Barbara’s funeral arrangements. The family appreciates Revonda Stephens, who graciously donated her time and skills to ensure Barbara’s radiance shined. Finally, the family is deeply indebted to all of the family, friends, and Christian brothers and sisters who lifted prayers, sent cards, and provided food during Barbara’s extended illness and passing.
